How Does It Work?
- The spectroscope shows us things we cannot see with the naked eye alone: when all the colours of the visible spectrum are present [red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet], you will also be able to see a white light. When that white light travels though your gem, you will see the colours that make up the white light because the wavelengths that produce them are absorbed by the stone. You'll then notice that certain colours vanish as the light passes through, to be replaced by a vertical black line.
Simply note which colour from the spectrum has disappeared and the position of the black line and you will have a unique spectral picture for your gem. This 'picture' is the gem's €œcharacteristic absorption spectrum€ and is the key to you being able to successfully identify your stone.
