If you, or someone you know, is a musician with a liking for unusual instruments or a collector of Chinese artifacts, this traditional flute – known as a dizi – will make a unique addition to any collection.

The dizi has been played in China for 1000’s of years with some historians believing that it was imported into the middle kingdom as far along ago as the Han dynasty which reigned between 206 BC and 220 AD!

Other flutes have blowing and finger holes but the dizi differs as it has an additional hole – the mo kong – between the mouthpiece and finger holes. A thin membrane of reed [not incuded] is glued over this hole and when played creates the bright and distinctive nasal resonation that the dizi is renowned for.

This beautiful, authentic bamboo dizi has been handcrafted in China and is intricately carved with Chinese characters. 

It is made from two separate pieces, making it simple to store and carry – something that made it particularly popular with poorer, rural dwellers who incorporated the dizi into their many forms of folk music.
